Magnesium enables muscles to relax. Got tight shoulders Backache? Sore leg muscles? Cramp at night? Physiotherapy and massage, osteopathy or chiropractic may help, but their benefits will be strictly temporary if your magnesium level is too low. Any muscle that a body-work therapist has coaxed into “letting go” will be contracted again within hours. Muscle action is a “Yin-Yang” affair; calcium enables muscles to contract, and magnesium enables them to stretch and relax. They work in tandem. But contrary to popular belief, most of us need more magnesium, not more calcium. And too much calcium can push magnesium out of the body, and clog the blood vessels of the heart.

I’m going to suggest that if you want to do some spring cleaning, you spring clean your gut not your house. The chemicals that most of us use for cleaning our houses are toxic. Try doing a quick inventory of the bottles stashed under your kitchen sink. Detergents, disinfectants, carpet cleaner, washing up liquid, furniture polish – all of them. Check the bathroom too. Now have a look at their ingredients – they’re listed on the bottle, but you may need your magnifying glass. Sometimes you will even see the skull and cross-bones sign on there. We’ve become a bit desensitised to this sign, but it means what it has always meant: danger.

To avoid burning, you need to build up a tan slowly. In response to a little sunshine, the melanocytes in the skin will start to produce the brown pigment melanin, which is actually protective against sunburn. So roll your sleeves up and wear shorts as soon it’s bearable to do so in the UK – April or May. Get outside at every opportunity. Even a few minutes a day will help. Then increase your exposure time. When the sun is strong, the parts of your body that haven’t been exposed for a long time need five minutes maximum on the first day, then 10 on the next, 15 on the next and so on. When you cover up, do so with loose, white, cotton clothing.

The mould count goes up high in September, and once the mould has become visible as black patches in your bathroom/kitchen/bedroom, it is already quite severe. Mould gives off chemical substances which are every bit as toxic as synthetic ones. People can actually become ill from spending too much time in a mouldy bathroom/bedroom/kitchen. House dust mites (HDM) feed on moulds, so measures to reduce mould will also help to reduce HDM. When you get out of bed in the morning, turn the duvet right back for at least an hour to let the night-time sweat evaporate. Otherwise moulds will have a field day in your bed, and the dust mites ditto.
